World Peace – an Illusion
Since the beginning of time , the human society has been marred by conflict , which its cause has been as a consequence of the ingenuity of the human mind which reflects in several ways ,such the desire for comfort, greed, negligence to religion . History can attest to this in the several wars that occurred among different human societies and the emergent heroes of such wars. For example in the Trojan war which occurred within the 12th and 13th century Bc, names like Achilles , hector and Odysseus were ubiquitous, hence they were the emergent heroes of the war that lasted twenty years with only one survivor. Then a question arises if the world appreciates these so-called heroes (men who take the lives of others) how then can world peace be instilled.
over time individuals , societies have benefited from the woes of other individuals and societies, not forgetting that the primary objective of man is comfort, hence with achieving a comfortable state being paramount , the peace of other individuals is rather but secondary. This is evident in the innumerable summits world leaders have embarked upon to bring about global peace and freedom, which till this moment have proved to be futile towards restoring the peace and serenity the world clamors for. An example is the opposition which the end to slave trade from merchants who benefited from it, though it was though as inhumanity to man but those gained from it supported it.
Greed , another human character is a major setback to the pursuit of peace the world over. The quest for more , not getting satisfied is a dilemma in the course for peace between man and his neighbors. Of all the inventions and great scientists that existed in the 20th century Albert Einstein was posthumously awarded the epithet ‘man of the century’ for bringing an idea to the production of atomic bombs, in which today happens to be the greatest threat, not only to world peace but to the existence of the human race. where this leads is that those who possess this idea tend to influence the wish of others to satisfy their desires. This is evident in all the bombings, abductions , kidnappings and terrorist attacks taking place the world over. furthermore greed backed by power serves to advocate the concept social Darwinism , ‘might is right’, or rather’”survival of the fittest”.
Negligence to religion happens to be a very disturbing occurrence that threatens world peace. Most religions in the world believe that man should in peace with his neighbor the pacesetters of several religion’s, Jesus Christ (for Christianity), prophet Muhammad(for Islam), and many other religious pacesetters, but humans , who according to Aristotle are “religious animals” do compromise the beliefs and inclinations to the pursuit of ends that are contrary to what their faith is. The many religious wars , that have taken place over are at some occasions against the ethics and values of such religions.
Conclusively , the lack of peace in the world can be attributed to man’s failure to consider the next man, and even some of those who advocate for world peace deep down within their minds would want to compromise for their neighbor, and seems no matter how much advocacy is made on world peace it would only remain an illusion in our minds if every individual do not change his/her ways and see peace as a fundamental aspect of human society, just as conflict is, and most importantly make immense effort towards achieving harmony and peace globally
